Random Dozen Wednesday

1. How good are you at delaying gratification?
Sometimes pretty good, and sometimes not

2. Maybe a marshmallow wouldn't be too difficult a temptation for you. What food (or anything else) would be most tempting?
Something chocolate of course.

3. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being saintly) how patient are you?
I'm about a 2, maybe 3. This is bad and something I need to work in considering my career choice. You have to be extremely patient when teaching kids, and that is something that I just don't have. I have come to realize that more here lately with Chad and his homework. Thank goodness I get good practice before I finish school.

4. Have you ever waited for something in life only to be disappointed upon realization of the goal/object/etc.?
Yeah a few times

5. Are you a person who takes shortcuts?
Sometimes. When I try to take shortcuts, something usually happens to where I end up having to do it the right way. So I usually go ahead and do things the right way.

6. Which line is hardest to wait in?
A checkout line. I don't know why but I hate doing that. Standing in line for five hours to get a signature from a Bama football player was not too bad. There were people all around to talk to and get to know.

7. Did you wait to discover the gender of your unborn child until its birth?
I don't have a child. IF....big IF....I do have a child, I will find out what it is. I think it is easier that way.

8. Are you more patient with children or the elderly?
Elderly! I need to be more patient with children.

9. Did you ever sneak a peek at a present?
No, I let it be a surprise or I get told off on lol. Travis is big on surprises, and when I told him I didn't care for gift surprises and he could go ahead and tell me what he got me for Christmas, he didn't like that idea lol.

10. What is the longest you've ever waited for anything?
I have been waiting for 3 years to finish my degree.

11. Who has more patience, you or your significant other?
I'm not married, so I don't know yet!!

12. Which of the following songs about waiting is your pick for the best? (OK, you may substitute another, if you like.)

A) Anticipation by Carly Simon
B) The Waiting by Tom Petty
C) Right Here Waiting for You by Richard Marx
D) Wait for Me by Rebecca St. James

I can't think of any waiting songs....... Out of these four, I like Rebecca St. James.

Random Number Seven

After lots of thought, I have found seven random things about myself. Here ya go Britt =)

1.  If I could spend one day, without a time limit in one store, it would be Barnes & Noble. I absolutely love that store. There are so many great books to look through. Magazines galore, and movies also. The smell of the wonderful coffee is so relaxing.

2.  I really enjoy decorating. If I was not head over heels wanting to be a teacher, I would be a home interior designer. The fun thing about that is it doesn't require a degree and years of schooling!!

3.  I believe there is no such thing as having too many shoes. I love shoes. Flats, Heels (although not my fave since they are not comfy), slip-ons, boots, tennis shoes, and flip flops. I have just about every kind there is, and will own more!

4.  I am a total neat freak. If something is out of place, I have to fix it. That also goes about organization. I have no idea where I got this from, but I have to have clean and order in my room for sure.

5.  I love scrap booking. I used to do it all the time, but ever since I started college, I never have time. I am more into my school work than hobby. I also love taking pictures. I take what I can, but would love to have a really good camera for photography.

6.  I am a General Hospital fanatic!! Not many people know this about me at all. I have watched it ever since I was little with my mom. Now I love watching it all the time. I guess there is something about escaping my world and going into a soap opera world haha.

7. Last but not least, I am extremely random. I can be random in my talking sometimes, jumping from one subject to the next. It is like I think of something that I want to say, and say it so I don't forget. haha.

Out of Nowhere

Wow was today crazy. First of all, my getting up early is not working out.....slept until eleven!! I had a math class to attend at Northeast. It didn't last long at all. The instructor is really nice. I knew her from last semester. She is the principal of Paint Rock Valley High School, and that is where I did my field experience at. I only knew one person in the small class, Farrah. She was at Northeast with me at the end, and took some of the same classes last semester. She is not an Elementary major, so we are about to go our separate ways. Anyways, back to the point.....

For our math class we have a book that is not a big published book. One of the instructor's at Athens wrote the book, and gave it up to a small publishing company. The agreement was that all EL 324 (Teaching Math in Primary Grades) students had free access to the book. So, go print the book for yourself right? Easier said, than done! The whole book, credits and all, takes up a whole five inch.....yes, 5".....binder. First of all, a five inch binder all to itself is about ten dollars, and the paper and ink to print the book....there is no telling.

One of my Northeast friends, who is the same major as me, took this class with the same person last year. So I call her up after class, and ask her if she still has it. She asks if I need it. I say yes. She says where are you at. I tell her Rainsville. She says come on down and get it. She lives in Fort Payne, so I think, it will be easier to go get it now since I have over halfway there anyways. So I head that way.

While there, she gets a phone call from someone she doesn't know. When she answers, it is a recording. The recording was from Northeast's weather thing that they have letting the students at Northeast know that Jackson County was under a tornado warning. What?? It was sunny, and warm. Where did this storm come from?? I start freaking out knowing that my brothers were home by themselves. We turned on the weather, and the way they were talking it was headed for my area.

Not much longer, my uncle calls to see if I was at home. I tell him no, but the bros are. He says that they need to go over to my grandmother's (brick house) for a while. So I ask if I need to head home before it gets there, or stay in Fort Payne. It is smarter to stay. I call Trav, and he is ahead of the game. He is already at my grandmother's house. Problem though, it was locked, and no key. Now What? He tells me dad is calling him, so I hang up. So end of story, the storm ended up going above us, and all is calm at my house.

The pictures and videos are amazing of the tornado.

Something exciting is happening on Saturday. Rolando McClain is coming to the mall. Last Sunday, Terrance Cody came, but the line was all around the mall, so I didn't get a signature. I did see him up close as I was passing, and boy that guy is big! The one stands at 6'5" and weighs in around 350 pounds. McClain is going to the NFL this year, so last season was his last. Roy Upchurch will follow him on Sunday at the mall. I plan to go early enough to see Rolando, but as I said in the beginning, getting up has been hard for me to do this week!

I still have not done the random seven about me, and I still promise I will get to that!

What Teachers Make

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life.  One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education.

He argued, "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"

He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about teachers: "Those who can, do.  Those who can't, teach."

To stress his point he said to another guest; "You're a teacher, Bonnie.  Be honest.  What do you make?"

Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, "You want to know what I make? (She paused for a  second, then began...)

"Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.

I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor.

I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can't make them sit for 5 with out an I-Pod, Game Cube or movie rental. You want to know what I make?"  (She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table.)

I make kids wonder.
I make them question.
I make them criticize.
I make them apologize, and mean it.
I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions.
I teach them to write and then I make them write.
I make them read, read, read.
I make them show all their work in math.

I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know in English while preserving their unique cultural identity.

I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe.

I make my students stand to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, because we live in the United States of America.

Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life.

(Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.)

"Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant...You want to know what I make?

I MAKE A DIFFERENCE. What do you  make John?"

The pay, yearly schedule, and hours in the work day doesn't matter to me. That is just part of it to me. What is said in this is what makes me want to be a teacher. I was so glad that one of my instructor's shared this with the class.

Coming Back Down

Wednesday was the last day that I blogged, and I just did Random Dozen. We received some sad news Wednesday evening.

My great-grandmother passed away. She has been sick for a really long time. About two weeks ago she took a turn for the worse. She stopped eating, drinking, and responding to anything. She went ten days without anything. She quietly and peacefully drifted off to Heaven. The funeral was Saturday, and just by seeing the people there you knew how great of a person she was. She had nine children. One of them being my wonderful grandmother. Nineteen grandchildren. One of them being my terrific mother. Thirty great-grandchildren. One of them being me. Nine great-great-grandchildren. Pretty much the whole chapel consisted of family. Someone did a count, and counting everyone I listed, and spouses, there are about ninety in the family.

I remember going to her house when I was little with my grandma. She would always turn on the t.v., get us a blanket to sit on because she didn't want us to sit on the carpet. She would ask us if we wanted anything to drink, or a snack cake. She would talk about the characters on the t.v. (we watched Gulla-Gulla Island on Nick) and how silly they were. We were little, so we liked it. I think I was about seven or eight. She had a dog named Buttons. I can't remember what kind it was. I have not been to her house in a long time, but it's just knowing that someone that was there for so long, isn't there anymore is a sad feeling.

I have been tagged to do seven random facts about me, and I promise I will get to that. I have to think of some randomness. As for everything else, things are going about the same. I subbed at Paint Rock Valley Wednesday. It was high school, but I still enjoyed it. I am starting to adjust to everything, and starting to like it. I saw my buddy Thursday at a gas station. He wants me to go back to CVS, and I refuse haha. That is probably the part I miss the most is chatting with the vendors. The Pepsi guys were my faves haha. One I have known of since I was little, the other I got to know, and the rep I learned was the dad of a girl my brother went to school with. Small world sometimes.

Terrance Cody is coming to the mall today, so I think I am going to see him. Put on my Tide gear =)
Colts won their game last night, so they are moving on. One step closer to going to the Super Bowl!! But also one step closer to being finished with football for months. Blah!!

Wednesday's Random Dozen

1. When was the last time you craved a food--what was it, and did you cave?
When I got home this afternoon, I was craving a Reese cup in the worst way. You better believe I caved!!

2. M & M's or Skittles?
Peanut Butter M&M's please

3. Have you ever read the Bible completely through?
No I have not. Sadly, I haven't read it as much as I should at all.

4. How long does it take you to really wake up in the morning?
about 30 minutes. I am the hardest person to ever wake up. I always lay there until I am wide awake, and then it still takes a while. Need coffee as well!

5. Have you ever been on a cruise? If not, would you like to?
No, and I don't think I would. I might change my mind.

6. Who is your favorite actress?
Jennifer Garner. She is awesome playing in 13 Going On 30, and is also just as great playing the adult role in Catch & Release. My two favorite movies by the way =)

7. ______ is something that I will just never understand.
I guess why the male population has to be "like that" most of the time. But we can't live without them!

8. How much of a technology junkie are you?
Somewhat I guess. Travis got the brain for that. He can do anything with any technology.

9. Do you enjoy selecting greeting cards for people, or is it more of a cultural "have to" for you?
I really like it. The readings are great. Whoever writes cards knows exactly what to say and when to say it when they don't even know who it is going to. They put our thoughts on paper when we can't sometimes.

10. When was the last time you got a new style/haircut?
Maybe about two months ago. I am ready for another one soon!

11. What do you enjoy shopping for most?
Clothes. For sure. I also like grocery shopping for myself and with my parents.

12. What's the last thing you think of before you leave the house?
"Did I get the keys? Where is my phone? Do I have my wallet?" Then whatever errands I need to run follows in thought.

Early Bird

Today was the first meeting of art class. This is more than just a look at art, art appreciation, or anything like that. The art that is required for my Elementary degree is actually an art class. Today, when I walked in, she asked us to take a piece or paper, a green, red, and brown crayon, and have a seat. As others filled the room, she asked us to simply draw an apple. An apple...that's it?? So I did....and boy was it funny! Then she makes it worse, she tells us to tape them to the wall. I thought, "Are you trying to embarrass us on our drawing skills??" She actually liked them. Then she goes to the supply room, and brings boxes or paints, yarn, ribbon, markers, and pencils. She then asks us to draw another apple. I have never looked at art the way she asked us to see it today. The point of the lesson was, look at the difference of a piece where there are limitations (crayons), and the difference in a piece that has no limits (yarn, markers, paint). There is far more detail, and in many ways. It was cool to see the difference.

We have lots to do for this class. A lot of artistic things to do. Which is kind of fun, but knowing that I am not going to have to time to have art time in my classroom makes me not even want to take this class. The only way we will be able to have art time for children is to back down on the reading and math. It is amazing at how different classrooms are, the requirements are, in schools now than when I was in school. I remember in Kindergarten, all we did pretty much was artistic things. Now, they have to know how to read by the end of Kindergarten. Crazy.

The ice is finally gone!! For now anyways. The temperatures are back to winter comfortable instead of winter too cold. Haha. It is only going to get better as the week goes on. I rented some movies for this weekend. I have "(500) Days of Summer" and "What About Steve." I hope they are good. I don't know what the weekend holds yet, and I don't even know if I will watch them. Thank goodness for Power Play at Movie Gallery.....They are due back whenever!

Out & About

The mountain finally thawed just enough for us to manage to get down it and into town. We have been "trapped" since Thursday. My dad managed to make it to and from work both Thursday and Friday. He is such a dare devil. But the rest of us stayed here. We were to afraid of putting a car in a ditch. There are still lots of ice patches around, and parts of the side of the mountain was still solid ice.

I guess everyone had the same idea we did in the small town of Scottsboro. Wal-Mart was so freakin' crowded!! It got on my nerves so bad. It got on all of our nerves. The Wal-Mart in Hampton Cove is no where near that crowded when we go. I had to get art supplies for my art class that is meeting on Tuesday. This class is for school, and I can already tell I will probably not like it. We have to paint, draw, and play a Recorder. I'm nervous about it! But I keep thinking, I'm not the only one that will be playing it and making myself look stupid. Everyone will probably be embarrassed to play it.

I finally got a wall charger for my phone. Just in time for schools to start calling me for work. I was getting nervous about it dying all the time and not staying on. I picked up my last paycheck from CVS today. Felt good! Lisa, one of the shifts, asked me if I was happy and did I miss it. I was like yes I am, and no I don't! I am glad to be away from the stress of that place.

They are saying the temps are supposed to warm up a little on in the week. I like snow, but this bitter cold and ice has got to go. Can't wait to see some warm ups and sunshine!!

#13

Last night was a night that my family and I (minus Chad) had been waiting for all football season. The BCS National Championship. The reason I put in minus Chad is, he says he will never say Roll Tide and mean it. He goes for every team that is against Alabama. He also has a few Auburn shirts.....I tell him he will come to his senses on day =)

Alabama, on paper had a great season. They didn't play great every game. They had their days where they just were not up to par. But they managed to pull a win. Take Tennessee....We were about to lose that game by a few points until "Mount Cody" put his hand in the way of that kick and said, "Not in my house!" It took the boys some time to warm up sometimes. They would be playing however, and then third quarter came, and you could see the "team" again. They played some awesome ball this season. Put fans on the edge of their seats, and gave us high blood pressure! All in all, it was an awesome season to watch, and I'm glad I got to see it!

Last night was a little unfortunate though. Texas quarterback, Colt McCoy was hurt in the first quarter. I wish he would have gotten to play in his last game as a Longhorn, and in the championship. His backup had a rough start, but finally started to figure it out and perform. He was a Freshman, who had not played even one minute of a college football game yet. He looked terrified at times! He got frustrated, and I couldn't help but feel bad for him. He was not ready for this, and he had no idea it was going to happen. He had not prepared for his first game to be the National Championship!!

I was so glad we pulled the win. We ordered our championship gear last night, and should be in next week. I hate that college ball is over for months. Now it is time to see the playoffs in the NFL. Super Bowl is February 7, then football is over. Sad!! Football is my favorite. I'm ready to see some playoffs. Go Colts!!!

Random Dozen!

I found this on someone else's blog, and then another one I follow started doing it too. So I was reading the questions, and decided I wanted in on the randomness too. So here is my first Random Dozen!

1. On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being a cranky-baby-hissy-fitter, how much of a complainer are you?

I will put myself in the middle on this one. 5. Sometimes I complain a lot, but I feel like I have plenty reason to. Sometimes I complain about the most unimportant stuff, realize what I'm doing, and stop.

2. When someone else is talking, do you listen, or are you thinking about what you're going to say in response?
I listen. That is why it takes a few minutes for me to reply to someone. If someone is talking to me and wanting advice or help on something, I usually go...."Umm...." Then tell what I think.

3. I just deleted 1062 messages from my email account. Do you have any plans for a clean sweep this month--of anything?
I am doing a lot of clean sweeps this month. I am transforming my room a bit, Cleaned out some junk, and also clean sweeping myself!

4. Tell us about your perfume. Was it a gift? What does it remind you of? Do you have a signature scent?
It wasn't a gift. I was at a friend's house that sold Avon. Her neice sold Mark products. She had this perfume that smelled awesome. So I ordered it. Sassy Mark. It doesn't really remind me of anything.

5. What is your best organizing tip for the new year?
I am in school, so I keep up with everything in binders. I have very terrible organizational problems. If it is not organized, I fix it until I'm satisified.

6. What is your favorite comic strip?
I really Peanuts. And sometimes "Love Is..." is kinda funny. I have always liked Charlie Brown so the Peanuts one is cute.

7. Do you sleep with a fluffy or flat pillow?
Fluffy until it is flat haha!! I just bought a new fluffy one at Kmart. Joe Boxer pillows are great and cheap!!

8. What color is your kitchen? Why did you choose that color?
I don't have my own kitchen yet. But when I do get my own, I plan to have orange and black appliances. I really like Rachael Ray and her equipment, and mom has already said she is buying me the set when I get out hah! As far as wall colors, I haven't decided with the appliances that I want. Maybe white and have then decorated with pictures or something.

9. What’s the most interesting bumper sticker you’ve seen?
I have seen some very interesting ones, but I am really blank right now.

10. Do you prefer an expensive writing tool or whatever is lying around?
I am a papermate gal. My former co-worker wanted to give me a gift of a planner and a set of pens for when I started subbing in schools to keep up with where I work. So she tells me to pick out some pens. I get some Papermate, clickers that are about $3. She said, "Would you pick out some GOOD pens! Those are cheap-os." I ended up with them because those are the best gel pens ever.

11. What chore doesn’t feel like a chore – you just enjoy it?
Cleaning my room. Like I said, organization is key!!

12. If your parents often repeated themselves, what is something one of them said more than once?
They both always say "be careful." It is like a broken record that I love hearing all the time. "Be careful" means "I love you."

Getting Back On The Saddle

Yesterday was a little off. I don't know if it was because my body knew it was Monday and I was not at work, or what the deal was. I indulged into so much chocolate yesterday! I had gotten pretty good about limiting my chocolate long before the holidays. I was eating a bite here and there. It is like my stress level was beyond ten, and I just felt better after the chocolate. Bad, bad me!

So my calorie intake was monstrous yesterday which means I tried to watch it more today. I have been thinking about it and maybe I will exercise more than I count what I eat. Still eat whatever, and just drink more water and eat more fruit. Which is fine by me. I wonder if that will work. or just cancel each other out?

Anyways, I drove to Athens yesterday to buy books. The cost was no where near what I was expecting which is always a plus! I got by this semester way cheaper than last. Which means more money coming in to cover me while I'm awaiting calls for work. I set my alarm sort of early this morning so I won't get into the routine of sleeping late just in case I get sporadic work calls. I have developed a pretty good sleeping habit and hope to keep it that way. There for a few months, I was hardly sleeping. My brain would not shut down. Some how I have finally calmed myself and can sleep better.

I was going through my stuff earlier and found a book. I remember getting it for my 20th birthday from a friend. I have had it this long, and just now decided to read it. It is called Laughter For A Woman's Soul. It has stories and passages in it. I don't know why I never read it before. New thing to read that gives a little lift to the heart is always good.

I have five months before I get a phone upgrade, and mine is dying. I don't know if it will hold on for five more months. First, my charger broke. So I started charging it with the car charger when I could. Now, it doesn't want to hold a charge. It died last night and wouldn't come back on. So I charged it today in the car. I went to get it and it said it was fully charged. I bring it in, turn it on, and when it finishes loading I see the main screen. After saying "Fully Charged," I have only three out of four batteries. So now it doesn't want to charge right. I hope it holds on for a few more months!

Daily Survival Kit

I received an email today from one of my elementary teachers and wanted to share it. It is called Your Daily Survival Kit:

Toothpick... to remind you to pick the good qualities in everyone, including yourself.

Rubber band... to remind you to be flexible. Things might  not always go the way you want, but it can be worked out.

Band-Aid... to remind you to heal hurt feelings, either

Eraser.... to remind you everyone makes mistakes.  That's okay, we learn by our errors.

Candy Kiss... to remind you everyone needs a hug or a compliment everyday.

Mint ... to remind you that you are worth a mint to your family & Me.

Bubble Gum... to remind you to stick with it and you can accomplish anything.

Pencil... to remind you to list your blessings every day.

Tea Bag... to remind you to take time to relax daily and go over that list of God's blessings. This is what makes life worth living every minute, every day

I think we all need a stash of this in our purses! It is cool how little items like those can be used for inspiration.

Busy Start!

It is finally here! Hello 2010. I hope you are kind! I have been reading other blogs and looks like I'm not the only one who either had a terrible 2009, or just ready to begin a new year. It feels like 09 took forever to get gone. What did you do the first day of the new year??

I spent mine at home. I spent time with my family, and we gathered boxes that we didn't need from Christmas and past things, and burnt them. It felt good standing by the fire after it was freezing yesterday. When we came back in, we cleaned. I have organization problems....I don't know if it is like an OCD thing or what, but if things are not organized it drives me crazy. I re-organized my room, and helped mom get things settled in the kitchen. We watched football of course. It was on all day. The only game that I was really interested in was Florida. They played really good. Tebow did awesome for his last college game.

Mom and dad have decided to let Chad play little league basketball. His first practice is later today and he is so excited. I hope they do a little league football....that will be fun to watch. Little kids are so funny. I don't know what we have planned for today. Most Saturdays we go to Huntsville. I hope we do, I love going shopping and looking around. Movies, eating. All of it is so fun to me.

I have a busy week ahead and I can't wait to get it started. School starts back, NO WORK!!, and my friend and former co-worker came home this past week. So I want to go see her. She had cancer, and had major surgery. She is doing really good, and she came home from her daughter's house. She starts treatments soon. Keep her in prayers that she responds like she is supposed to. I am so excited that I don't work at CVS anymore!! I don't think I will get bored.....I bought something new to keep me busy.

I have had my eye on this object at CVS for a while. I almost bought it one day, but ended up backing out. Well when I got the idea to start the eating and exercising thing for the new year, I finally gave in a bought it. IT is called an Xtreme Fit......generic for the Wii Fit pretty much. LOTS cheaper by the way! I don't know how much a Wii Fit runs, but I will tell ya the Xtreme Fit is only $50.00. It does a lot of what the Wii does, and also has a few games on it. It has this fun dancing game on it that I am guessing it is supposed to be similar to Dance, Dance Revolution. I plan to keep myself busy with that! I will have homework too. I am hoping that I will start getting calls to work in about two weeks. I can't wait!
